John Benner, M.D.
CHESTER COUNTY ORTHOPAEDIC ASSOCIATES - Doctor Benner practices general orthopaedics with concentrations in joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery. He performs primary and complex revision hip and knee arthroplasty procedures. He has extensive experience with arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder. Doctor Benner also has interests in surgery of the foot and ankle. He completed his Medical Degree and Orthopaedic residency at Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

Mark Brigham, M.D.
SURGICAL ORTHOPEDICS - Dr. Brigham is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in general orthopedic surgery, joint replacement and sports medicine, as well as arthroscopic shoulder and reconstructive shoulder, knee and hip surgery.

Anne E. Colton, M.D.
SURGICAL ORTHOPEDICS - Dr. Colton began her interest in orthopaedic surgery as a Division 1 basketball player at the University of New Hampshire. It was there that she met an orthopaedic surgeon who helped her teammate return to the game after a season-ending ACL rupture. In this she discovered the unique ability that a surgeon has in restoring athletes to full function. She served as team captain in her senior year and was named Scholar Athlete of the Year.

After medical school at Temple and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Penn, she furthered her surgical skills at the elite Rush University Medical Center, where she worked with the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls, as well as served as a team physician for a professional women's softball team and a minor league ice hockey team. At Rush she advanced her arthroscopic skills in the shoulder, knee, hip, and elbow, and had a tremendous amount of experience with joint and articular cartilage restoration procedures such as osteochondral autografting and allografting, meniscal transplants, autologous chondrocyte transplantation (ACI), and microfracture.

Dr. Colton is the head team physician for the women's professional soccer team, the Philadelphia Independence. In addition, together with her partners at Surgical Orthopedic Associates, Dr. Colton is the head team physician for Marple-Newtown High School, Garnet Valley High School, and Delaware Christian Academy.

Board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, Dr. Colton is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, and the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society. Eugene Elia, M.D.
LLANERCH ORTHOPAEDICS - Dr. Elia specializes in total knee and total hip replacement surgery. His goal is to decrease patient pain, while improving function and allow for the return to daily activities and a normal lifestyle.

Jonathan P. Garino, MD
PA ORTHOPAEDIC CENTER - Dr. Jonathan P. Garino is an internationally recognized joint replacement surgeon with expertise in ceramic bearing, avascular necrosis and complex joint reconstruction problems including infections, revisions and dysplasia. He is the principle designer of the Journey Total Knee Replacement System by Smith and Nephew, and he has expertise in partial knee replacements and minimal incision techniques.

Dr. Garino is a graduate of Georgetown University and Georgetown University School of Medicine. He received his orthopedic training at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He then completed his formal training with an adult reconstructive fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania where he subsequently joined the staff and remained there until January 2011. He served as an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and director of the adult reconstruction fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of medicine, where he has educated and trained over 200 orthopedic surgeons and Fellows. He is the immediate past President of the Philadelphia Orthopedic Society. Dr. Garino is the author of numerous books on hip and knee replacement and he has published over 50 papers in the field. He has given over 200 lectures all over the world on various aspects of hip and knee replacements.

Dr. Garino is a welcome addition to the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Center, where he will see patients at all of our office locations and perform surgery at both Paoli Hospital and Paoli Surgical Center.

Frank Giammattei, M.D.
ORTHOPAEDIC ASSOCIATES - Dr. Giammattei joined the Orthopaedic Associates Division of Premier Orthopaedics in 1986. Dr. Giammattei has been practicing orthopaedics in Delaware County for 25 years. He finished his orthopaedic residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1985. He joined the Orthoapedic department at Crozer Chester Medical Center and Riddle Memorial Hospital that year. His practice largely consists of total hip and total knee replacements.

Charles Hummer III, M.D.
ORTHOPAEDIC ASSOCIATES - Dr. Hummer joined Orthopaedic Associates Division of Premier Orthoapedics in 1995. Dr. Hummer graduated from Amherst College in 1985, with a B.A. in Biology, Phi Beta Kappa. He received his M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1989, and in the year following graduation, served a one year surgical internship at Pennsylvania Hospital, the first hospital in the United States.

His Orthopaedic Surgery residency was completed at Thomas Jefferson University, and following residency he completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, where he was an assistant team physician with the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL, as well as with the University of Cincinnati.

A career long resident of Delaware and Chester Counties who began practice in 1995, Dr. Hummer is President of the Orthopaedic Associates Division of Premier, and he is also past President of and a current member of the Board of Directors of both the Pennsylvania Orthoapedic Society and the Delaware County Medical Society. He is a Board Certified member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, serves on the Medical Liability Committee of that organization, and is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Hummer earned a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and was notified of this in January 2010.

Dr. Hummer is currently the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician for Swarthmore College, and was recently chosen to be the Team Physician for the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer. He believes that optimum care for patients with bone and joint pain or injury is community based and personal, allowing for a strong patient-physician working relationship.

He resides in Glen Mills with his wife and two children. Dr. Hummer maintains medical staff privileges at the Crozer Keystone Health System and Main Line Health System/Riddle Memorial Hospital.

James McGlynn, M.D.
ORTHOPAEDIC ASSOCIATES - Dr. McGlynn joined Orthopaedic Associates Division of Premier Orthopaedics in 1991, after completing a four-year commitment with the U.S. Navy, including a tour of duty in Desert Storm. Dr. McGlynn has a special interest in Sports Medicine, including arthroscopic surgery of both the upper and lower extremities. He is also skilled in joint replacement of the shoulder, knee and hip.

Robert A. Ruggiero, M.D., F.A.C.S.
PA ORTHOPAEDIC CENTER - Robert A. Ruggiero, M.D., F.A.C.S. graduated from Hahnemann Medical College and was elected into the National Medical Honor Society. He completed his orthopaedic residency program at Temple University Hospital under the direction of Professor John Lachman. He then joined the staff and faculty of Hahnemann Hospital and Medical College as senior instructor in orthopaedic surgery and director of the orthopaedic residency teaching program.

Dr. Ruggiero entered into private practice at Paoli Memorial Hospital and in 1979 established the Ruggiero Orthopaedic Associates, now known as the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Center.

Dr. Ruggiero has held many positions during his career, dedicating most of his efforts to the Paoli Hospital and the Main Line Health System. He served as President of the Medical Staff of Paoli Hospital, Vice-Chairman of the Paoli Hospital Department of Surgery, Campus Chief of the Department of Surgery and System Chief of Orthopaedics for the Main Line Health System. He was also appointed to the Paoli Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and the Main Line Health Board of Governors. Dr. Ruggiero also served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. Ruggiero is known as one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in the area and was voted “Top Doc” by Main Line Today magazine for many years. He is especially noted for his expertise in total joint replacement surgery and arthroscopic surgery. He visited national centers to obtain the training and expertise that he developed over decades of practice, performing thousands of joint replacement surgeries. Dr. Ruggiero is a leader in his field and has helped to pioneer some of the orthopaedic advancements that we have seen used over the years. He shares his experience and skill with his colleagues by mentoring them to achieve their highest potential of excellence.

As a lifelong athlete and an avid competitive runner, Dr. Ruggiero competes in over fifty races per year ranging from 5K’s to half-marathons, usually placing or winning in his division. His most coveted race is the one he started himself in 2002, the annual “Race Against Arthritis” 5K Run/Walk, which benefits the Arthritis Foundation and promotes healthy lifestyles and exercise. In 2004, he was awarded the Financial Development Award by the Arthritis Foundation for his efforts. In 2005, Dr. Ruggiero’s “Race Against Arthritis” was recognized by the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and was asked to join his race with the annual Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis. Dr. Ruggiero’s efforts helped raise over $200,000.00 for the Arthritis Foundation in 2009.

Despite his busy professional life, Dr. Ruggiero is also a family man. Along with his wife, he has two children and four grandchildren, with whom he spends most of his spare time.

Robert A. Ruggiero, Jr., MD
PA ORTHOPAEDIC CENTER - Dr. Ruggiero, Jr. developed an early passion for orthopaedics while assisting his father rolling plaster casts in the emergency room. He would also spend time at the office assisting with cast applications, observing x-rays and discussing patient care.
He attended The Haverford School, where he wrestled for the famed Neil Buckley and earned academic and scholastic honors.

Dr. Ruggiero, Jr. attended and graduated Cum Laude from Duke University in 1988, majoring in biology and economics. He then went on to receive his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in 1992 and completed a five-year residency in orthopaedic surgery at Allegheny University/Hahnemann Hospital. Taking a special interest in spinal surgery, Dr. Ruggiero, Jr. obtained fellowship training at the Indiana Spine Institute.

In 1999 he joined practice with his father at Ruggiero Orthopaedic Associates, now the PA Orthopaedic Center, where spinal surgery and joint replacement surgery are his primary focus. Dr. Ruggiero, Jr. is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Ruggiero, Jr. was raised and currently lives in the area with his wife and their four children. He is an avid squash player who has coached his children and is closely involved in their development and activities. He is also active in both The Haverford School and Duke University Alumni Associations.
