There’s nothing better for your health than aerobic exercise to work your muscles and raise your heart rate, and when the summer months hit in Philly, there are plenty of things to do! Find out some of the newest events and happenings in the summer.
Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest
For the first time, the Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest at Penn’s Landing has transformed into the perfect summer setting with a roller rink, a boathouse-styled Lodge, a play area for children, and plenty of food and drop options throughout the season. There are also various events planned at Summerfest throughout the summer months, open seven days a week, so be sure to check them out. You have until the end of September!
With SEPTA, take the Market-Franford Line to 2nd Street, and numerous SEPTA buses stop are at or near Summerfest at Penns Landing. If you’re driving, there are parking lots located at Lombard Circle, Walnut and Market Street at Columbus Boulevard. On foot, you’ll walk over the Market Street Bridge.
Nightscape Longwood Gardens
For the days that are too hot to be spent outside, Longwood Gardens at Kennett Square has launched an after-dark installation called Nightscape: A Light and Sound Experience. The garden-wide installation features moving images and lights choreographed to music in eight areas of the garden. Whether you have a love for plants or music, you won’t want to miss this nighttime experience. It runs through October 31st, 2015.
From July 15th-August 23rd, a pop-up outdoor public space transforms 24th Street and the Parkway into a center for family fun. Enjoy giant games of chess, checkers, Jenga and Connect Four, dine on dishes from food trucks and have a cold one in the outdoor beer garden. The Oval also hosts various events and activities for visitors to participate in from Wednesday to Sunday. Wednesday is for health-oriented events, arts and culture activities on Thursdays, and free outdoor movies on Fridays. Saturday is game day and Sunday is designated family-fun day.
Screenings Under the Stars Summer Movie Series at Penn’s Landing
- Bring your blanket and lawn chair to Penns Landing to watch your favorite movies under the night sky every Thursday in July and August. Screenings begin at dusk on the banks of the Delaware River and like all events at Penns Landing, admission is free. Check out the movies that will be featured there this summer:

The Art of the Brick at the Franklin Institute
When you’re looking to beat the heat, escape to the Franklin Institute to experience the art exhibit focused around LEGO bricks. Artist Nathan Sawaya’s masterpieces and original artworks make up the world’s largest collection of art created entirely from LEGOs.
Whether you want to take the kids to a family fun day, enjoy a beer in a beer garden, or see all the sights Philadelphia has to offer, you should get out there and get your legs moving!
