Premier’s major players knew and respected each other. This sense of community reduced my anxiety and facilitated my recovery.

Summer Fitness Activities in Philadelphia

Summer is in full swing in Philadelphia—the temperatures are soaring, the sun is shining, and there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Getting your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day can do wonders for your health, but it’s easy to get bored of the mundane walk around the block or jog on the treadmill. Instead, participate in something new and exciting that you may not have done before.

Read on to learn more about the many fitness activities going on in Philadelphia this summer.

Yoga on the Pier

Free yoga classes are held along the Delaware River beneath the Ben Franklin Bridge. Local yogi Malik Wilson holds classes every day, so you can select which ones work best for you. Remember to bring your own mat, and you can even bring along your kids or pets. These classes are free for everyone, but donations are welcome.

Paddleboard Yoga on the Delaware

If yoga on solid ground is just too routine for you, switch it up with stand-up paddleboard yoga right on the river. Aqua Vida hosts SUP Yoga at Spruce Street Harbor Park with classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays, ending September 26.   This activity is a combination of stand-up paddleboarding and yoga. Participants will get on a paddleboard and perform a series of yoga stretches as led by the yoga teachers of Aqua Vida.

Hiking Trails

Philly is full of hiking trails and summer is the perfect time to explore them while also getting in some great exercise. Every Sunday, Chasing Trail running group explores the trails of the Wissahickon so you can take in the wildlife and scenery. Fairmount Park Conservancy hosts runs through the Belmont Plateau trails throughout the summer, but if you’re more of a walker, Philadelphia Distance Walkers takes participants through both Philly streets and trails.

Get to the Parks

Running around in a park, throwing a Frisbee with your friends, or playing fetch with your dog is a great way to burn calories while also providing hours of fun. Philadelphia has numerous parks located around the city, including Rittenhouse, Clark Park, and Penn Treaty Park. Pack a picnic full of fruits and veggies for a healthy summertime outing.

Biking to the Beach

For those ambitious bikers who want to escape the heat of the city and feel the ocean breeze, check out this guide for route pointers so you can bike to the Jersey Shore. This kind of trip is for the experienced biker and will cover 70 miles in about six hours. It will be a challenge, but you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing dip in the ocean when you finally make it.
