Regenerative Medicine:
Optimize the Healing Process

Premier Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Physicians specialize in non-operative treatments for orthopaedic conditions and utilize the most advanced Regenerative Medicine (Stem Cell Therapy) treatments for patients. These treatments use a patient’s own cells to address painful spine conditions, osteoarthritis, soft tissue (tendon, ligament and muscle) and cartilage damage. We utilize Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments, Bone Marrow Aspirate, Prolotherapy and LipogemsTM, which was awarded one of the Eleven Best Sports Medicine Technologies for 2016 by Orthopedics This Week. The goal of these regenerative treatments is to improve your quality of life after an injury or natural degeneration, using your body’s own cells to stimulate healing.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

A component of your blood, called platelets, has large reservoirs of proteins called growth factors, which initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. PRP is concentrated blood plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets—and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors—can be 5 to 10 times greater than usual. The injection of this product into a damaged area promotes tissue repair.

Conditions We Treat

  • Tendon, ligament, muscle injuries
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cartilage damage
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Back pain
  • Joint pain
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer’s elbow

Lipogems™ is a gentle process that uses your body’s own fat tissue to cushion and support areas of injury or damage as your body heals itself. Fat is rich in regenerative cells, growth factors and cytokines. It is especially effective for areas where there are soft tissue defects.

How it works:

  • Fat is taken from the stomach or thigh areas using a local anesthetic.
  • LipogemsTM uses an FDA-approved device that rinses, cleans and resizes the patient’s harvested fat.
  • This harvested fat is then precisely injected into the patient’s injured areas with the use of ultrasound guidance.

Conditions treated:

  • Partial rotator cuff tears
  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Labral tears
  • Meniscal tears
  • Arthritis of the knee, hip, shoulder and ankle

Prolotherapy involves the injection of a stimulating substance (usually dextrose/sugar) to trigger the body’s intrinsic ability to heal an injury that incompletely resolved or a repetitive stress that is beyond self repair—it is usually focused at the weakened points of tendon or ligament attachments to bone.

Fast Fact:

Unlike Cortisone shots, which only decrease inflammation and either slow or stop the healing process, regenerative treatments all aim to heal the injury.

How it works:

  • This substance is highly concentrated compared to the surrounding tissue, which causes water to shift from the inside to outside of the cell; causing a minor injury.
  • The cell substances and dextrose stimulate the healing cascade of cells to clear the damage and re-build the area.

Conditions treated:

  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Back pain
  • Arthritis pain

Bone Marrow Aspirate

When injury occurs, there are usually inadequate supplies of regenerative cells needed to repair the body. Bone Marrow Aspirate (Stem Cell Therapy) is a procedure that is best for patients with moderate to severe orthopedic injuries, due to the rich reservoir of regenerative cells contained in bone marrow.

Conditions treated:

  • Lumbar spine disorders
  • Cartilage damage
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tendon and ligament tears

How it works:

  • A physician obtains your own concentrated bone marrow stem cells using a specialized needle under local anesthetic.
  • The bone marrow stem cells are injected into the damaged area.
  • The injection of your own bone marrow cells into a damaged area allows the body to repair, by providing a super-concentrated mixture of regenerative cells.
