Achilles Tendon Ruptures
An Achilles tendon rupture is a complete or partial tear of the thick band of tissue connecting your calf muscles to your heel bone. It severely impacts your ability to walk and push off your foot.
Symptoms
- A sudden, severe sharp pain or "pop" in the back of the ankle or calf
- Inability to bend the foot downward or push off while walking
- Swelling, stiffness, and bruising near the heel
- A noticeable gap or depression in the tendon above the heel
Causes
Ruptures occur when the tendon is subjected to sudden, forceful stress, such as jumping, pivoting, or rapidly accelerating during athletic activities.
Risk Factors
- Age: Most common between ages 30 and 50
- Sports: High-impact activities like basketball, tennis, and soccer
- Steroid Injections / Antibiotics: Certain medications weaken tendon tissue
- Obesity: Increased weight places additional strain on the tendon
Diagnosis
Our sports medicine specialists diagnose ruptures through a physical exam—including the Thompson test—and imaging like MRI or ultrasound to confirm tear severity.
Treatment
Treatment ranges from non-surgical immobilization in a boot or cast to surgical repair for full structural restoration.
