Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)
Femoroacetabular Impingement occurs when extra bone grows along one or both of the bones forming the hip joint. This abnormal shape causes the bones to rub together during movement, leading to friction, cartilage wear, and potential labral tears.
Symptoms
- Deep, aching groin pain, especially during or after activity
- Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the hip
- Sharp pain when flexing, crouching, or sitting for long periods
- A clicking or catching sensation in the joint
Causes
FAI develops when the hip bones do not form normally during childhood growth. This structural mismatch causes uneven pressure across the joint during everyday motion.
Risk Factors

- Repetitive hip flexion and twisting motions
