Hip Bone Spurs

Hip Bone Spurs (Osteophytes)

Smooth, bony projections that form along the edges of the hip joint bones, typically developing where bone meets bone to compensate for joint stress.

Symptoms

  • Persistent hip, groin, or thigh pain
  • Joint stiffness and reduced range of motion
  • Grinding, clicking, or catching sensations during movement
  • Pain that worsens with activity or prolonged sitting

Causes

The body produces extra bone in response to friction, cartilage deterioration, repetitive stress, or prior joint trauma.

Risk Factors

  • Osteoarthritis and joint degeneration
  • Aging (most common over age 50)
  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
  • Obesity and high-impact repetitive sports

Diagnosis

A comprehensive physical exam paired with digital imaging—including X-rays, MRI, or CT scans—to evaluate joint space and spur location.

Treatment

  • Non-Surgical: Physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), activity modification, and targeted ultrasound-guided cortisone injections.
  • Surgical: Minimally invasive hip arthroscopy for spur removal or total hip replacement for advanced joint damage.
