Jumpers Knee

Jumper’s Knee (Patellar Tendonitis)

Jumper’s knee is an inflammation or injury of the patellar tendon, which connects your kneecap (patella) to your shinbone. It weakens the tendon, causing localized pain that can disrupt athletic performance and daily mobility.

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness directly below the kneecap
  • Stiffness or aching during jumping, running, or bending
  • Swelling around the front of the knee

Causes

Repeated stress from frequent jumping, landing, or rapid directional changes causes microscopic tears in the patellar tendon over time.

Risk Factors

  • Playing sports like basketball, volleyball, or track
  • Tight quadriceps or hamstring muscles
  • Muscular imbalances or hard playing surfaces
  • Sudden spikes in training intensity

Diagnosis

A physical examination by an orthopedic specialist to pinpoint tenderness, often paired with X-rays or an MRI to rule out other injuries and evaluate tendon damage.

Treatment

  • Non-Surgical: Rest, ice, physical therapy, targeted stretching, and patellar tendon straps.
  • Advanced Options: PRP therapy or minimally invasive surgery for severe, chronic tears.
