Knee Bursitis

Knee Bursitis

Knee bursitis is inflammation of a bursa—a small, fluid-filled sac located near your knee joint. Bursae reduce friction and cushion pressure points between bones and nearby tendons, muscles, and skin.

Symptoms

  • Swelling, tenderness, and warmth over the knee
  • Pain when moving, bending, or putting pressure on the knee
  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion

Causes

  • Frequent kneeling on hard surfaces
  • Direct blow or sudden impact to the knee
  • Overuse from repetitive bending or jumping
  • Bacterial infection of the bursa (septic bursitis)

Risk Factors

  • Prolonged kneeling (carpet installers, plumbers, gardeners)
  • Participation in contact or high-impact sports
  • Pre-existing conditions like osteoarthritis, gout, or obesity

Diagnosis

A Premier Orthopaedics specialist diagnoses knee bursitis through a physical exam and medical history. Imaging, such as X-rays or MRI, may be used to rule out fractures, while fluid aspiration can test for infection.

Treatment

Initial care involves rest, ice, compression, and anti-inflammatory medications. Physical therapy, corticosteroid injections, or fluid drainage may be recommended for persistent pain. Surgery is rarely needed unless conservative methods fail.
