Little League Elbow
Little League Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
- Description: An overuse injury involving inflammation or stress fracture of the growth plate on the inner side of the elbow joint in young throwers.
- Symptoms: Inner elbow pain, swelling, decreased throwing speed, and a loss of distance or accuracy.
- Causes: Repetitive stress and high-velocity throwing mechanics that pull on the developing growth plate.
- Risk Factors: Pitching frequently, playing catcher, throwing curveballs too early, poor mechanics, and year-round play.
- Diagnosis: Physical examination evaluating joint stability and range of motion, typically confirmed using X-rays to assess growth plate health.
- Treatment: Immediate rest from throwing, physical therapy to correct mechanics, anti-inflammatory measures, and a gradual, supervised return-to-play program. For severe cases, specialized orthopedic care may be required.
