MCL and LCL Sprains/Tears

MCL & LCL Sprains/Tears

The Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) stabilize the sides of the knee, preventing excessive inward and outward movement. Sprains or tears occur when these ligaments stretch beyond their limits or rupture.

Symptoms

  • Knee pain, tenderness, and swelling on the inner or outer joint line
  • Feeling of instability, "giving way," or locking
  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion
  • Popping sound or sensation at impact

Causes

Ligament injuries usually result from direct blows to the outside or inside of the knee during contact sports, or sudden directional changes, twisting, and awkward landings.

Risk Factors

  • Participation in contact or pivot-heavy sports (soccer, football, basketball)
  • Previous knee injuries
  • Weak leg muscles or improper athletic conditioning

Diagnosis

Premier Orthopaedics specialists evaluate knee stability using comprehensive physical exams and clinical stress tests, paired with weight-bearing X-rays or MRI imaging to assess the tear’s severity.

Treatment

  • Non-Surgical: R.I.C.E. protocol, bracing for stability, and physical therapy to rebuild strength.
  • Surgical: Advanced minimally invasive reconstruction or repair for severe or multi-ligament tears.
