Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis Syndrome
- Description: A neuromuscular condition that occurs when the piriformis muscle in the buttocks irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve.
- Symptoms: Deep buttock pain, shooting pain down the back of the leg, numbness, tingling, and pain that worsens when sitting, climbing stairs, or running.
- Causes: Muscle spasms, tightness, swelling, or scarring of the piriformis muscle, often triggered by overuse or injury.
- Risk Factors: Repetitive hip movements (like running or cycling), prolonged sitting, poor form during exercise, and prior gluteal trauma.
- Diagnosis: Determined through a physical examination, medical history, specialized hip and leg mobility tests, and imaging (such as an MRI) to rule out lumbar spine issues.
- Treatment: Ranging from conservative care like physical therapy, stretching, and anti-inflammatory medications to targeted injections or specialized therapies for persistent cases.
