Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes painful inflammation in your joints. Unlike wear-and-tear osteoarthritis, RA leads to joint swelling, potential bone erosion, and joint deformity over time.

Symptoms

  • Tender, warm, and swollen joints
  • Joint stiffness, particularly in the morning or after inactivity
  • Fatigue, fever, and loss of appetite
  • Symmetrical pain (affecting the same joints on both sides of the body)

Causes

RA occurs when your body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, specifically the synovium—the lining of the membranes that surround your joints.

Risk Factors

  • Sex & Age: Most common in women, typically starting in middle age.
  • Family History: Higher risk if a close relative has RA.
  • Lifestyle: Smoking and environmental exposures increase risk.

Diagnosis

At Premier Orthopaedics, diagnosis involves physical examinations, blood tests (checking for elevated inflammatory markers and antibodies), and advanced imaging like X-rays or MRIs to assess joint damage.

Treatment

While there is no cure, customized treatment plans manage pain and prevent progression:

  • Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologics
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Targeted corticosteroid injections
  • Joint preservation or replacement surgery for severe damage
