Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy
Rotator cuff tear arthropathy is a complex condition combining a massive, chronic rotator cuff tear with severe shoulder joint arthritis. Without the rotator cuff stabilizing the joint, the arm bone shifts out of position, rapidly wearing away protective cartilage.
Symptoms
- Severe, persistent shoulder pain (especially at night)
- Significant weakness and stiffness
- Limited range of motion or inability to lift the arm
- Grinding sensation (crepitus) during movement
Causes
Occurs when an untreated, massive rotator cuff tear leaves the humeral head unstable, causing it to rub abnormally against surrounding bones and develop advanced osteoarthritis over time.
Risk Factors
- Advanced age (typically 65+)
- History of long-standing or untreated rotator cuff tears
- Repetitive heavy lifting or chronic overhead shoulder stress
Diagnosis
Premier Orthopaedics specialists diagnose this condition through a comprehensive physical exam, range-of-motion testing, and imaging such as X-rays and MRI scans to assess joint wear and tendon damage.
Treatment
- Nonsurgical: Physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and targeted joint injections to manage pain.
- Surgical: When conservative options fail, a reverse total shoulder replacement is often recommended to restore function and relieve pain.
Whether you're dealing with a recent injury or years of chronic pain, our orthopaedic specialists create personalized treatment plans that reduce pain, restore movement, and help you live more comfortably.
