Severe Sprains

Severe Sprains & Strains

Sprains involve severe tears or full ruptures of ligaments, which support joints. Strains affect fully torn muscles or tendons, which connect muscle to bone.

Symptoms

  • Severe pain, rapid swelling, and intense bruising
  • Inability to bear weight or move the joint/muscle
  • Physical deformity or joint instability

Causes

  • Sudden twisting, hyper-extension, or direct impact
  • Violent contractions during athletic movements or high-impact falls

Risk Factors

  • Previous joint injuries
  • Fatigue and improper warm-ups
  • High-impact or contact sports

Diagnosis

Our sports medicine specialists perform physical examinations and use diagnostic imaging (X-rays or MRIs) to evaluate soft-tissue damage and rule out fractures.

Treatment

Immediate treatment follows the R.I.C.E. protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Severe Grade 3 tears often require immobilization, physical therapy, or surgical repair.
