Shoulder and Clavicle Fractures
Shoulder & Clavicle Fractures
A break occurring in one or more bones of the shoulder joint, most commonly the clavicle (collarbone), proximal humerus (upper arm bone), or scapula (shoulder blade).
Symptoms
- Sudden, sharp pain and tenderness
- Visible deformity, swelling, or bruising
- Inability to lift or rotate the arm
- Grinding or popping sensation with movement
Causes
Direct impact to the shoulder from motor vehicle collisions, sports collisions, or falls directly onto the shoulder or an outstretched hand.
Risk Factors
- Participation in high-impact or contact sports
- Advanced age or low bone density (osteoporosis)
Diagnosis
Comprehensive physical evaluation and digital X-rays to determine fracture severity. A CT scan may be ordered for complex joint-involved breaks.
Treatment
- Nonsurgical: Arm sling immobilization, rest, pain management, and physical therapy for non-displaced breaks.
- Surgical: Realignment and stabilization using plates, screws, or pins for displaced or severe fractures.
