Shoulder Bursitis

Shoulder Bursitis (Subacromial Bursitis)

Inflammation of the bursa, the small fluid-filled sac that cushions and reduces friction between the shoulder bones, tendons, and muscles.

Symptoms

  • Dull ache or sharp pain on the outside or top of the shoulder
  • Increased pain when lifting the arm overhead or reaching backward
  • Discomfort when lying on the affected side
  • Joint stiffness and localized tenderness

Causes

Repetitive overhead motions, direct trauma or falls, and mechanical impingement from bone spurs.

Risk Factors

  • Participation in overhead sports (baseball, swimming, tennis)
  • Manual occupations (painting, carpentry, construction)
  • Poor posture and natural age-related joint degeneration

Diagnosis

A clinical physical exam assessing range of motion and strength, alongside X-rays or MRI imaging to evaluate joint anatomy and rule out rotator cuff tears.

Treatment

  • Conservative: Rest, ice therapy, NSAIDs, targeted physical therapy, and corticosteroid injections.
  • Surgical: Minimally invasive arthroscopic bursectomy for chronic cases unresponsive to non-surgical care.
