A SLAP (Superior Labrum, Anterior and Posterior) tear is an injury to the ring of cartilage (labrum) surrounding the shoulder socket.
Description & Causes
This tear occurs at the top (superior) part of the labrum where the biceps tendon attaches. Causes include acute trauma—such as a fall onto an outstretched arm or a sudden pull—as well as repetitive overhead motions common in athletes and laborers.
Symptoms & Risk Factors
- Symptoms: Catching, locking, popping sensations, pain with overhead movement, and shoulder weakness.
- Risk Factors: Engaging in overhead sports (baseball, tennis) or occupations requiring heavy lifting.
