Ankle Sprains

Ankle Sprains & Instability

An ankle sprain occurs when supporting ligaments stretch beyond their limits or tear. Repeated or improperly healed sprains can lead to chronic ankle instability, where the outer side of the ankle frequently gives way.

Symptoms

  • Swelling, bruising, and localized tenderness
  • Difficulty bearing weight
  • A feeling that the ankle is unstable, popping, or giving out

Causes

Sudden rolling, twisting, or turning of the foot during sports, running, or stepping on uneven ground.

Risk Factors

Prior ankle injuries, inadequate rehabilitation, weak surrounding muscles, or high-impact athletic activities.

Diagnosis

A comprehensive physical exam assessing stability and mobility, complemented by digital X-rays or MRI to rule out fractures and assess tissue damage.

Treatment

  • Non-Surgical: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (R.I.C.E.), custom bracing, and targeted physical therapy.
  • Surgical: Ligament repair or reconstruction for severe, persistent instability.
