Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome)

Dull, aching pain around or under the kneecap (patella), often worsening during physical activity or after prolonged sitting.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the front of the knee or around the kneecap
  • Discomfort when running, squatting, or going down stairs
  • Mild swelling or a popping/grinding sensation

Causes

Overuse, repetitive impact, muscle imbalances, or poor kneecap alignment placing stress on the patellofemoral joint.

Risk Factors

  • Long-distance running or sudden increases in activity intensity
  • Weak or tight thigh and hip muscles
  • Flat feet or poor foot arch support
