Concussion

Concussion

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the brain to bounce or twist inside the skull. This sudden movement creates chemical changes in the brain and can temporarily disrupt normal brain function.

Symptoms

  • Headaches or pressure in the head
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, balance issues, or double vision
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
  • Confusion, memory loss, or difficulty concentrating
  • Mood changes or feeling "foggy"

Causes

Concussions occur when an impact causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Common causes include athletic collisions, falls, motor vehicle accidents, and physical impacts to the head or torso.

Risk Factors

  • Participating in contact sports (football, soccer, ice hockey, rugby)
  • Previous history of head injuries
  • High-risk activities like cycling or skiing without protective gear
  • Falls in older adults or young children

Diagnosis

Our sports medicine specialists conduct a comprehensive evaluation, including symptom reviews, neurological exams, balance testing, and cognitive assessments to safely determine the extent of the injury.

Treatment

Recovery requires physical and cognitive rest, followed by a gradual, medically supervised return to daily activities and sports.
