Herniated Disc

Herniated Discs

Spinal discs act as cushions between your vertebrae. A bulging disc occurs when the disc's outer layer weakens, allowing it to stretch and bulge outward. A herniated disc occurs when the inner gel-like core tears through the outer ring, irritating nearby nerves.

Symptoms

  • Sharp, shooting pain radiating down your arms or legs (sciatica)
  • Numbness, tingling, or "pins and needles" in the extremities
  • Muscle weakness in the legs, feet, or hands
  • Chronic lower back or neck pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or lifting

Causes

  • Natural age-related disc degeneration and loss of flexibility
  • Sudden trauma or strain from improper heavy lifting
  • Repetitive twisting or bending motions over time

Risk Factors

  • Excess body weight placing additional stress on the spine
  • Sedentary lifestyle or occupations requiring prolonged sitting or heavy manual labor
  • Genetic predisposition and smoking (which reduces oxygen supply to discs)

Diagnosis

Our interventional pain specialists perform a comprehensive physical evaluation, including neurological assessments, alongside advanced imaging such as MRI or CT scans to pinpoint the exact location and severity of the disc issue.

Treatment

We prioritize non-surgical, interventional therapies to restore mobility and relieve pain, including targeted epidural steroid injections, physical therapy, radiofrequency ablation, and image-guided nerve blocks.
