Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome

IT Band Syndrome is a painful overuse injury where the thick band of fibrous tissue running from your hip down to your outer knee becomes tight, inflamed, or irritated.

Symptoms

  • A sharp, burning pain on the outside of the knee
  • Swelling near the outer knee joint
  • Pain that worsens during running, cycling, or going downstairs

Causes

Repetitive knee bending causes the IT band to rub repeatedly against the lower thighbone, leading to friction and localized inflammation.

Risk Factors

  • Sudden increases in training distance or intensity
  • Weak gluteal or hip muscles
  • Running on banked surfaces or wearing worn-out shoes
  • Biomechanical issues like flat feet or bowed legs

Diagnosis

Our orthopedic specialists diagnose ITBS through a physical exam, evaluating range of motion, and checking localized tenderness. X-rays or MRIs may be used to rule out other knee injuries.

Treatment

Recovery typically involves rest, targeted physical therapy, stretching, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, and corticosteroid injections for stubborn pain. Advanced care ensures a safe return to activity.
