Knee Fractures

Knee Fractures

A knee fracture is a break or crack in one or more of the bones forming the knee joint: the patella (kneecap), distal femur (thighbone), or proximal tibia (shinbone). These injuries disrupt joint stability and range of motion.

Symptoms

  • Severe, immediate knee pain
  • Swelling, bruising, and tenderness
  • Inability to bear weight or bend the knee
  • Visible deformity or abnormal bone placement

Causes

  • Direct high-impact trauma (automobile collisions)
  • High-impact sports collisions or awkward falls
  • Severe twisting injuries under heavy force

Risk Factors

  • Participation in contact or high-speed sports
  • Osteoporosis or low bone density
  • Advanced age, increasing fall risk

Diagnosis

Our orthopedic specialists evaluate your knee through physical examination and advanced imaging, including X-rays, CT scans, or MRI, to determine the exact location and severity of the fracture.

Treatment

Treatment ranges from non-surgical immobilization (casting, bracing, and physical therapy) for stable breaks to advanced surgical repair (internal fixation with plates and screws) for complex or displaced fractures.
