Meniscus Tear

Meniscus Tear

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of tough, rubbery cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between your thighbone and shinbone. A meniscus tear is one of the most common knee injuries, occurring when the cartilage ruptures under pressure or sudden twisting.

Symptoms

  • A distinct "popping" sensation at the time of injury
  • Knee pain, swelling, and stiffness
  • Difficulty bending or straightening the knee
  • A feeling that your knee is catching, locking, or giving way

Causes

A meniscus tear often occurs during sports when pivoting, cutting, or making sudden stops. It can also be caused by heavy lifting or direct impact to the knee joint.

Risk Factors

  • Playing contact or pivot-heavy sports (football, basketball, tennis)
  • Natural age-related wear and tear (degenerative tears)
  • Previous knee injuries or underlying osteoarthritis

Diagnosis

Our specialists perform a comprehensive physical exam and maneuver tests. We frequently utilize MRI scans or X-rays to assess the degree of damage and rule out other bone injuries.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the size and location of the tear:

  • Non-Surgical: Rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Surgical: Minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to repair or trim the torn cartilage when conservative care isn't enough.
