Osteochondral Lesion of the Talus (OLT)
An OLT is localized damage involving both the articular cartilage and the underlying bone on the top surface of the talus (ankle bone).
Symptoms
- Deep, aching ankle joint pain (worse with weight-bearing)
- Persistent swelling and stiffness
- Catching, locking, or clicking sensations during movement
Causes
OLTs are most commonly caused by traumatic ankle injuries—such as severe sprains or fractures—that compress or shear the joint cartilage.
Risk Factors
- History of recurrent ankle sprains
- Chronic ankle instability
- Participation in high-impact or pivot-heavy sports
Diagnosis
Our specialists combine physical examinations with targeted imaging—using X-rays to check joint structure and an MRI to accurately measure the lesion's size, depth, and stability.
Treatment
Initial care involves non-surgical management like rest, bracing, and targeted physical therapy. For persistent or severe cases, Premier Orthopaedics offers advanced minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery and tissue restoration procedures.
Whether you're dealing with a recent injury or years of chronic pain, our orthopaedic specialists create personalized treatment plans that reduce pain, restore movement, and help you live more comfortably.
