Posterior Tibial Tendonitis
Posterior tibial tendonitis occurs when the tendon connecting your calf muscle to the bones on the inside of your foot becomes inflamed or torn. This critical tendon supports your foot’s arch during walking. Left untreated, it can lead to flatfoot or chronic instability.
Symptoms
- Pain along the inside of the foot and ankle
- Pain that worsens with activity
- Swelling along the tendon path
- Flattening of the foot arch
Causes
Overuse, high-impact activities, or sudden increases in exercise can strain the posterior tibial tendon over time.
Risk Factors
- Age (most common in women and individuals over 40)
- High-impact sports (running, basketball, tennis)
- Obesity, diabetes, or hypertension
Diagnosis
Premier Orthopaedics specialists evaluate your foot through physical exams, weight-bearing flexibility tests, and advanced imaging such as X-rays or MRIs.
Treatment
We prioritize conservative treatments first, including rest, custom orthotics, bracing, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medication. Surgery is considered only for severe or non-responsive cases.
