Scapular Dyskinesis

Scapular Dyskinesis & Winging

Scapular dyskinesis is an alteration in the normal movement or position of the shoulder blade (scapula). When the muscles supporting the scapula weaken or lose nerve function, the blade protrudes outward like a wing, disrupting healthy shoulder mechanics.

Symptoms

  • Visible protrusion of the shoulder blade
  • Pain, tenderness, or weakness around the upper back and shoulder
  • Snapping or popping sensations during movement
  • Limited range of motion when lifting the arm

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Causes: Nerve injury (such as long thoracic nerve damage), rotator cuff tears, labral tears, or repetitive strain.
  • Risk Factors: Overhead athletes (baseball, swimming, tennis), poor posture, heavy lifting, and direct shoulder trauma.

Diagnosis

A Premier Orthopaedics specialist evaluates your arm mechanics through a comprehensive physical examination, often supported by X-rays, MRI, or electromyography (EMG) to assess muscle and nerve function.

Treatment

Most cases resolve with conservative care, including targeted physical therapy, posture retraining, and anti-inflammatory medications. Severe nerve compression or underlying structural tears may require specialized surgical intervention.
