Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
Shin splints cause throbbing or aching pain along the inner side of your shinbone (tibia). This common sports injury results from repetitive stress and inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue surrounding the tibia.
Symptoms
- Dull, aching pain in the front or inner lower leg
- Tenderness, soreness, or mild swelling along the shin
- Pain that develops during exercise and may linger afterward
Causes
Shin splints are caused by continuous force and repetitive impact on the lower leg, often from sudden increases in physical activity, running on hard surfaces, or wearing worn-out footwear.
Risk Factors
- Flat feet or rigid arches
- Sudden increases in training intensity or mileage
- Running on uneven or hard terrain
- Poor biomechanics or improper athletic shoes
Diagnosis
At Premier Orthopaedics, our sports medicine specialists diagnose shin splints through a comprehensive physical exam, gait analysis, and review of your activity history. Imaging, such as X-rays or MRIs, may be used to rule out stress fractures.
Treatment
- Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (R.I.C.E.)
- Targeted physical therapy and calf stretching
- Custom orthotics or proper footwear recommendations
- Gradual, structured return-to-play protocols
Whether you're dealing with a recent injury or years of chronic pain, our orthopaedic specialists create personalized treatment plans that reduce pain, restore movement, and help you live more comfortably.
