Shoulder and Clavicle Fractures

Shoulder & Clavicle Fractures

A break occurring in one or more bones of the shoulder joint, most commonly the clavicle (collarbone), proximal humerus (upper arm bone), or scapula (shoulder blade).

Symptoms

  • Sudden, sharp pain and tenderness
  • Visible deformity, swelling, or bruising
  • Inability to lift or rotate the arm
  • Grinding or popping sensation with movement

Causes

Direct impact to the shoulder from motor vehicle collisions, sports collisions, or falls directly onto the shoulder or an outstretched hand.

Risk Factors

  • Participation in high-impact or contact sports
  • Advanced age or low bone density (osteoporosis)

Diagnosis

Comprehensive physical evaluation and digital X-rays to determine fracture severity. A CT scan may be ordered for complex joint-involved breaks.

Treatment

  • Nonsurgical: Arm sling immobilization, rest, pain management, and physical therapy for non-displaced breaks.
  • Surgical: Realignment and stabilization using plates, screws, or pins for displaced or severe fractures.
