Shoulder Bursitis
Shoulder Bursitis (Subacromial Bursitis)
Inflammation of the bursa, the small fluid-filled sac that cushions and reduces friction between the shoulder bones, tendons, and muscles.
Symptoms
- Dull ache or sharp pain on the outside or top of the shoulder
- Increased pain when lifting the arm overhead or reaching backward
- Discomfort when lying on the affected side
- Joint stiffness and localized tenderness
Causes
Repetitive overhead motions, direct trauma or falls, and mechanical impingement from bone spurs.
Risk Factors
- Participation in overhead sports (baseball, swimming, tennis)
- Manual occupations (painting, carpentry, construction)
- Poor posture and natural age-related joint degeneration
Diagnosis
A clinical physical exam assessing range of motion and strength, alongside X-rays or MRI imaging to evaluate joint anatomy and rule out rotator cuff tears.
Treatment
- Conservative: Rest, ice therapy, NSAIDs, targeted physical therapy, and corticosteroid injections.
- Surgical: Minimally invasive arthroscopic bursectomy for chronic cases unresponsive to non-surgical care.
