Shoulder Labral Tear

Shoulder Labral Tear (Glenoid Labrum Tear)

The labrum is a ring of firm cartilage that deepens the shoulder socket to stabilize the joint. A tear occurs when this cartilage frays, tears, or detaches from the bone.

Symptoms

  • Deep, aching shoulder pain
  • Catching, clicking, or popping sensations
  • Shoulder instability or a feeling of slipping
  • Decreased strength and range of motion

Causes

  • Acute trauma (falls onto an outstretched arm or direct impact)
  • Sudden, forceful pulling motions
  • Repetitive overhead arm stress

Risk Factors

  • Athletes in overhead sports (baseball, tennis, swimming, volleyball)
  • Heavy manual labor and weightlifting
  • Natural age-related joint wear

Diagnosis

Specialized physical evaluations, movement testing, and diagnostic imaging (MRI or MR arthrogram) to pinpoint the exact location and severity of the tear.

Treatment

  • Non-Surgical: Rest, anti-inflammatory medication, targeted physical therapy, and cortisone injections.
  • Surgical: Minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to trim or reattach the torn labrum when conservative care does not resolve symptoms.
