Shoulder Tendonitis
Shoulder Tendonitis (Rotator Cuff & Bicipital Tendonitis)
Shoulder tendonitis is inflammation or irritation of the tendons connecting shoulder muscles to bone, most commonly affecting the rotator cuff or biceps tendon.
Symptoms
- Dull ache or sharp pain in the outer shoulder or upper arm
- Tenderness when reaching overhead, backward, or lifting
- Joint stiffness, clicking, and reduced mobility or strength
Causes
Tendon inflammation typically stems from repetitive overhead motions, sudden strain, or age-related tendon wear.
Risk Factors
- Overhead sports (swimming, tennis, baseball)
- Repetitive manual labor (painting, carpentry)
- Age over 40 and poor posture
Diagnosis
Premier Orthopaedics specialists evaluate symptoms through a clinical exam, range-of-motion testing, and diagnostic imaging (X-rays or MRI) to assess tendon damage.
Treatment
- Non-Surgical: Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and targeted cortisone injections.
- Surgical: Minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery for chronic cases unresponsive to conservative care.
