SLAP Lesion Tear

A SLAP (Superior Labrum, Anterior and Posterior) tear is an injury to the ring of cartilage (labrum) surrounding the shoulder socket.

Description & Causes

This tear occurs at the top (superior) part of the labrum where the biceps tendon attaches. Causes include acute trauma—such as a fall onto an outstretched arm or a sudden pull—as well as repetitive overhead motions common in athletes and laborers.

Symptoms & Risk Factors

  • Symptoms: Catching, locking, popping sensations, pain with overhead movement, and shoulder weakness.
  • Risk Factors: Engaging in overhead sports (baseball, tennis) or occupations requiring heavy lifting.

Diagnosis & Treatment

  • Diagnosis: Our specialists use a physical examination, clinical maneuver tests, and advanced imaging like an MRI.
  • Treatment: Options range from physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications to arthroscopic surgery for severe tears.
